125 Key Word – We

The word we is used 1659 times in our Big Book 4th addition, so it must be a key word. We could say to use the word we 1659 times is a lot but the word I 7214 times. I believe, like most A.A. members, that our A.A. Program is a "we" Program. The primary use of the word I is in the personal stories. The use of the word we is mainly in the first 164 pages. I would like to share some of my favorite use of the word we from the Big Book? Some of my favorite use of the word we are the following:

• "We of Alcoholics Anonymous are more than one hundred men and women who have recovered from a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body. To show other alcoholics precisely how we have recovered in the main purpose of this book" (xiii Foreword to the first edition 1939).

• "Many do not comprehend that the alcoholic is a very sick person. And besides, we are sure that our way of living has its advantages for all" (xiii Foreword to the first edition 1939).

• "Lack of power, that was our dilemma. We had to find a power by which we could live, and it had to be a Power greater than ourselves. Obviously. But where and how were we to find this Power?

Well, that’s exactly what this book is about. Its main object is to enable you to find a Power greater than yourself which will solve your problem" (page 45 We Agnostics).
